Odometer problems
I need to know how to go about getting my odometer fixed on my '77 Camaro. The mechanic said I would probably need to take it out and send it somewhere or get a new one. Where would I even start though?

See if you can find one on ebay. It's only held in by a clip, and once in your hand you can twirl the numbers so it matches your true mileage. The whole odometer assembly is plastic, and the internal gears that make the numbers trip sometimes strip out from wear.

You'll actually need to pull the whole gauge cluster, as I don't know of a way to pull just the odometer. Does the speedo work fine? If so, then you will need the odom. fixed. At the cost of fixing it, I personally would consider just getting a good used gauge panel to swap. I see them often on Ebay for around $50-$60 and you wont get the odom. fixed for that price.
If you decide to pull it and have it fixed you're going to have to find a shop that does automotive instruments, or send it off to a place.
If you're handy you could pull just the speedometer out and replace it, but it's harder to find someone just selling the one piece of the gauge cluster, so you'll probably have to buy it all and swap all, or just remove the speedo.

Interesting where the one guy says it's not illegal to reset the odometer if the car isn't said to have actual mileage. As far as I was aware, it was illegal. Who's to say what is or isn't actual miles any more once the car keeps trading hands?

If it was illegal, then you couldn't even throw a used odometer in without changing the mileage to match, and you better keep close track of what the old one read. And for that matter, shouldn't it be illegal to drive around with a broken one? Afterall you're putting unrecorded miles on your car.
I think it's the intent when you change, and if it's for repair not to deceive, then it's fine.
