Oddball factory paint for '76
I have a Camaro mystery that I need some help solving. My grandmother owned a '76 305, purchased in Buffalo, NY. It had a metallic turquoise exterior (coupe) that my father swears was a factory paint scheme - he referred to the color as aqua. It had the buckskin interior. I've looked up the paint codes for '76, and I can't find this color anywhere. It's definitely not the light blue or dark blue options offered. Could this have been some kind of dealer paint special? Thanks!

I know you used to be able to special order a custom color on a new car if you wanted to wait for it and pay a few more $$$s. If this is the case it would show up in the build sheet of the car or the paint code designator. I dont know for sure if GM offered this service in the 70's or not. I know it was offered in the 50's and 60's. Ford and Dodge offered similar services. You were limited tho to colors that were available to the factories at the time.

Well, I thought there was probably an obvious solution to this one staring me right in the face. Turns out, while I've thought for years the car was a '76, it was actually a '77. And right there on the '77 factory color sheet...aqua. Doh.

No, sadly it rotted out like most of the mid-70s Camaros (especially ones that lived in Buffalo). I'll never forget the day I was cruising down the expressway and the bucket seat ripped right out of the floor and deposited me in the back. While I was driving. We sold it eventually, then I think it was in a wreck and finally scrapped.
