Newbie Computer Question
Hello everybody this is my first post and I am looking forward getting to know everybody and exchanging tips and knowledge. I am buying a 1981 Z28 tomorrow and the car is 100% stock. My question is if I remove the smog pump, exhaust manifolds, intake, and carb and replace them with headers, edelbrock intake and carb how will this effect the cars computer? I know that this car has a lock-up torque converter thats controlled by the computer. Also will the dash gauges still function? Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! From what I've gathered these early Chevy computers were not all that hi tech, and they will still work the other components. The computer needs to stay in, but it wont be an issue with performance.
Of course there may be legal issues with removing smog devices as these are federally mandated for street vehicles.

Thanks for your response!!! I got the Z28 home today and I love it. Its a 1981 with T-Tops, Auto, PW, Cruise and tilt. The color is Desert Sand with the deluxe interior and the best part is it only has 46K original documented miles!!!

You should post some pics in the "show us your car" thread that someone started up recently.
It sounds like a good find. What type of transmission is under it and is it the stock transmission that came with it? I thought the OD transmissions with lock up torque converters came out mid 80's in the third gens but I'm probably wrong on that.

I can't see them on your post #28. All I see is a box with "x" in it, but no pictures. I see everyone else's pictures fine, but nothing in your post.
