Need help with floor pans!!!!!
hey guys, i just bought a 1979 camaro z28 and i started tearing apart the interior. it needs new floor pans on both sides and i just had a few questions. first of all, are there any good websites that sell 2nd gen camaro rep. parts at good prices that you would recommend? and basically any other helpful hints o tips for the taking out and installation of floor pans would be a lot of help, this is my first project car and any advice would help, thanks a lot!
www.nationalpartsdepot.com www.paddockparts.com .you can buy full floorboards or sections.i used a air cutoff wheel and cut mine out .i traced a line above all the rust all the way around the area to be cut out.i cut it out, then i stuck the new piece in there and it fit real snug,i beat and banged a little bit to get holes to line up and wire welded in place.the thing is ,when you cut the rust out ,leave enough of the old floorboard in place that way something will stop the new one from going all the way thru, you need alittle left so you get that tight fit and it gives you something good to weld to,dont weld in one spot the whole time,it will warp.weld in 1" sections, stop and go to another 1" section and keep doing this till you have it all welded up
For a parts company you can go to www.classicindustries.com. Bowtie has all the right pointers. You will also want a few good drill bits to drill out the spot welds for the sub-structure. I use dewalt drill bits that has a self centering tip found at home depot. Also an air hammer or a body knife to split the spot welds after drilling. Home depot has a heavy duty metal paint scraper/paint can lid opener. I sharpen the edge of it and a hammer and it splits seams with ease
make sure you don’t cut to much of the original floor away. When I do this I leave a 1" overlap, keeps the new floor from falling through during install and allows you to weld it from the inside and underside. After a die grinding and undercoating you will never see the seam.
