help with trunk drop offs

Default help with trunk drop offs

I need to put new ones in. how are the old ones held on? spot welds? Im kinda new to the auto body world, so any help will be great. also this is a 73

the end of the trunk floor the drops down and gets welded to the back of the quarter panel

Default spot welded

yes they are spot welded about 2 inches apart

You need to cut the spot welds to remove the trunk drop. The picture will help you find them.


The arrows point to the areas where the spot welds are plus the rear edge is welded to the tail light panel. I use a 5/16" bullet bit in my angle drill to cut the welds. Try to locate the center of each spot weld and drill it out. You will still need to chisel the welds to get the two pieces of steel separated but do it carefully to preserve the metal in the quarter and the trunk floor. When using reproduction drops they usually do not fit very well at the tail panel and you may need to flatten the end to get a good fit. Once you have it fitted, use the holes you drilled to MIG weld the new part in. With a steady hand and a good job of setting the welder you can almost duplicate the look of original spot welds.
