Default Help with engine size

Having a little trouble figuring out if my 81 Camaro has the 305 or 350. The VIN suggets a 267 (letter J in 8th position) but the code at the rear is either 8970010 or 3970010 and the engine code at the front suggests little as all I can find is K04 14 9R. Is there anyone that can help? I'm also looking to replace the carb its a rochester Quadrajet #17085590 anyone know interchange carbs by other manufacturers as well, I have Edelbrock intake and manifold, would possibly like to see Edelbrock carb as well.
Thanks!![:-]

well. if it is the original motor in there and the original carb. you prolly have a 350. because the 305 only came with a 2brl. im not 100% on that but im pretty sure. and also the color of stuff under the hood like the kick down bracket. if its blue its a 305 and if its orange its the 350. im not 100% on that eitehr but thats what i heard

Thanks! Hopefully I'll have success now finding parts. I just wasn't sure, since I did VIN code searches and the 8th letter being a J was supposed to be a 267ci. Looks like they swapped the motor, cause there's no way this is a 267 with a 4bbl.Would you happen to know what carbs are interchangeable with the rochester 17085590, either holley or edelbrock,or know of any sites that can be of help?
Thanks again!!

I believe that casting # could be a 302, 327 or a 350 not a 267.........

The old engine I pulled outta my 79 had a 4bblQuadrajet in it however when Finally got it outta there the stamp on the back side of the block said 5.0L beside the engine code. If this represents the liters in the engine it would make it a 305. You can never really what the originalequipment on these carsanymore.

Anyways. I just wanted to let you know about that. I thought the whole time I had my old engine that it was a 350 and afterI pulled it out it was a 305 the whole time.

See if you can see a 5.0L stamped next to the engine code on the back of the block

Thanks everyone! I'll see if I can poke my head in behind the block, unless anyone has suggestions. It is right above where the engine code is stamped in a really difficult place to see...correct?

Double check the stamp code on the front of the block especially the last part. The casting code you gave is a very common casting for a 350what is the original color of the engine?
