I have a 1970 and I need to place some front speakers in. Beside the Kenwood speakers that I used to replace the originals I would like to place two high power speakers ( as the kenwoods are only 20 watts rms ) in addition. As you know there is no space in the doors. Any suggestions?

i actually have front speakers in my 78. The previous owner had 2 3-inch speakers in each door. Personally im not a fan of the setup i would rather put 1 bigger one in each door. But he had already cut out 2 spots in the panels so i just threw some old speakers i had laying around in the holes. I have a second set of panels that i would like to install and set up 1 big speaker in each door whenever i have the time to get around to it. Let me know if how big of a speaker you end up gettin in there if you could

I had 5" speakers in my doors before I replaced the interior panels. Shallow special style to clear the windows, but I had to cut a big hole through some very heavy metal! I placed them at the top front of the panels, and got good sound.
I had to remove the speakers to install the new interior panels, and now I am hesitant to cut holes, so I mounted the speakers under the dash, pointing down toward the floor. They work OK, but near the sound quality of the door location.
I'm still trying to figure out what to do with them. I am leaning towards back in the door, but under the panel, and taking a leather punch to perforate the panel above the speaker, more like the newer cars use.

I'm actually going to try perforating some holes in my old panels first! Then if I can get it done and looking good I'll do it again on the new panels. I figure I'll need to use a black felt pen around the holes to hide the light colored backer board, or remove the board the size of the speaker, and then just punch the vinyl.

I got my set of chep Chinese punches out tonight, and my old door panels. Tried a 1/4" spacing with 3/16" punch, but too close together. Tried a 1/4" punch with 1/2" spacing and that looked like a winner. The first pattern I did both rows lining up, but the second one I offset the ros halfway and that looked better. By offsetting the rows I can drop one hole on each row as I move down, until I get a circular shaped pattern.
I penciled it out with a square and a tape measure, and the lines will easily erase when done. Once I send the car to the paint shop I'll have the door panels here with nothing better to do, so I'll punch them both out at that time.
You can see the old location,(2nd pic) and the new will be the same, except a smaller 4" speaker.
