so came across a deal that i thought was too good to pass up, so i went to dad savings and loan, pled my case, and now my dad, brother, and me are the proud owners of 3 chevy 6.0 long blocks. oil pan to intake. aluminum heads.

the downfall, they were boat motors and 2 of them were in a fishing boat that was capsized some sand and gunk in them but what the heck.


my brother went to pick them up in his Montero...















so who is the expert on these engines and where do i look for casting numbers on the heads. which heads are the good ones.

what are my options for making these HEI/Carb'd

well i've got a camaro revival rapidly approaching, my brother has a 68 vette that needs resto and BOTH my brothers need to build sand rails.

so i think between these 3 and my set of iron vortec heads we'll be able to handle everything.

just need to figure out if i want to use one of these or use a mid 90's block with the iron heads.

the block would cost me 100$ and its a complete fully assembled long block but not a vortec.

however i have heads cam lifters and the guide plate/hardware to attatch to that block.

or i can take one of these 6.0l blocks, bore it +.030", and have one bad *** 383

so from what i'm reading online these are most likely a 71cc head which is rather large. i should be able to get a piston that will get me my desired CR right?

 

Being Marine blocks you'll want to be sure they are correct rotation! Some marine engines have cams and timing for reverse rotation, so might have to use different timing pickups, cams, and starters to convert to std. rotattion for use in a car.
If you're only reusing the blocks, pistons, and heads, then it wont matter about the rest.

i know the firing order is normally 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3 is it different in a marine application or just reversed?

 

Crank it by hand, watch the valves, Count your cycles.....intake,compression,power,exhaust. If the valves work backwards you'll know.

 

Firing order is the same on marine motors. They just spin backward. All three were in capsized boats? You may be ok. Buying just two I would be worried. The counter clockwise motors only come in in boats with two or more. One is normal the other reverse. That keeps the boat from wanting to drive in a circle and torquing over hard when you gas it.
