Default engine runs but car won't move

I bought a 1969 in not bad shape that is an automatic. The engine runs but when I try to put it into forward or reverse it will not go anywhere. I do not think that the driveshaft is spinning but i do not know the problem. Does anyone have any ideas about what is wrong.

it can be a number of things
does it have fluid in it? is the shift linkage hooked up? is the torque converter bolted to the flex plate? is the e-brake set? does it have a driveshaft?

Yeah like he said it could be anything...I'm not sure how similar the setups are for the transmisions, but on my 86 IROC-Z automatic, I pulled into the mall one day...got out did my ****, and when i went to leave, same probably..car started right up, but it didnt move anywhere...I looked under the car and there was a bolt just sitting there, I guess it was for the linkage, i just hand tightened it up and made it home no problem

I own a 69 as well with a 2spd powerglide. Today i just completed some work on it. I was having problems with it shifting late and sorry. i changed my fluid and took my tranny pan off. Replaced my modulator valve as well which was causing my problem. Anyhow On the left side of the tranny pan( thats if your directly underneath the car looking up at the pan), their is some sort of a gear related sensor that is bolted right on to the pan by two bolts. this controls how it goes in gear because when i went to put mine back on, i had to have somebody move the gearshift to a different spot to align the holes in the pan. this sensor dcevice also had a spring attached to it, if all things fail jack the car up and see if it is hooked to the the left side of the pan because if it is not, then it wont go anywhere.
