Color Change for a '68?
I am not well versed in CHEVYS, so I beg for some guidance. I am looking at a pretty stock 68SS 396/4sp car that is British Racing Green. I prefer Rally green or Black. The motor is not a numbers matching but the rest of the car is. I plan to sell the car in the next year, would this modification hurt the resale value? Could I sell it with the drab green color just as easy? It is shiny but just not what I call a cool color. Please respond to penick@nettally.com THANKS!
Well, I can't see you having much choice but to leave it the present color unless you want to eat some money. Let's say you could get a couple of thousand more for a good color, say red. Changing the car's color is really difficult, much more involved and expensive to re-paint than just re-spraying it the same color (doing it well means the door jams and inner trunk, and what do you do under the hood?: THAT would matter to a buyer). I'd just polish it up and try to sell it like that.
And there will be someone out there who likes that color. I happen to like british racing green a lot. A LOT. In fact, before buying the Porsche I was considering a new Mustang GT -- none of the colors excited me but I thought it would look great in BRG, so I asked a good local body shop what it would cost if I bought a black one and had them re-paint it BRG, leaving the underhood the from-the factory black but doing the rest of the car (inner doors, trunk) over to BRG. The estimate was $4800!!

Thanks guys for the input. I have to admit to having some experience in this area, but mostly with Mopars. I have painted many car 'jambs' and the underhood in a Chev is the best/easiest, just the top of the fenders mostly. I have a local body shop that has done several of my cars and he is very reasonable, like about $1000 to just shoot the outside of a perfect car, no filler/etc. But, changing colors is usually a no no, I agee.
NOW, another question. The car is all matching (I think) except the block. I understand the last 4 numbers of the vin are cast into the original block at the end of the number. If thats so, there is only one block and getting the orig back is probably a joke, correct? Is there any other way? Thanks,
