Default Car smokes when starts

The motor overheated about month ago due to the thermostat getting stuck. After i let it cool down and start it back up again i noticed white smoke coming from the tailpipe when i start it. I was thinking it was the piston ring that melted and now lets oil in. What else could it be? would it be better just to get another motor? thanks

I think you may be right, but it could also be a gasket in there, like a head gasket or intake gasket

If it was me, I'd give it time to re-seat the rings, and just do a compression check on the engine. If you have a gasket leak it should be easy to spot. I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless something drastic changes.

Be sure to check your water pump also, if it was spinning dry it might go bad quick. Check for water coming from the weep hole (at the bottom of the pump)and grab the fan and wiggle it and see if its loose.

does it like smoke while your drivin too?..cuz maby overheatin took out your head gasket and its burnin water....(white=steam).....my sister did that to a truck once...but it looks like a freight train when it does that so its most likely not...but maby theres like a slow leak into a cycinder and it steams on startup

daltons 1980 is correct, white smoke = coolant in combustion chamber. Probably due do a blown head gasket or leaky intake manifold gasket. Usually caused by heads not torqued properly, gasket surface not cleaned properly, or heads warped. Heads have a habit of warping if there is serious overheating. If you had enough heat to damage a piston ring, you had more than enough to warp a head.
