car noob question??

I can't hear it idle very well. It sounds fine from what I can hear. it seams like the tach is reading way off. If it is in fact idling high, turn the idle down. Should be able to back it off until the motor dies. If the idle won't go any lower then there is another issue.

1) try backing off the curb idle screw at the linkage arm, drivers side
2) make sure the fast idle (choke) linkage has dropped out of the way of the carb linkage, passenger side
3) make sure your ignition timing isn't too far advanced

Okay I got it I just needed to mess with the idle screw a little. Now I changed the throttle cable that goes from the pedal to my carb and that was pretty easy now I want to change the transmission kickdown cable because it just doesn't want to plug right in but I was wondering how hard is it to do that??? Or is there a way to just change the tip of it because it's just too big for some reason?? Thanks

If the cable is undamaged leave it. You can get the correct part to attach the cable from Autozone. It was less than 10 bucks for the one on my truck. Its just a "tit" for lack of a better word, the cable locks to it. I can take a pic of mine if you don't know what I'm talking about.
To change the kickdown cable you may have to drop the pan. I can't remember if it can be done from under the car. It would be a chore regardless.

I agree, I wouldn't change the kickdown cable. They're spendy, and the part Damon mentioned is way cheaper. The KD cable can be changed without pulling the pan, but if you lose grip on the attaching piece it drops in the tranny and then the pan will need to drop. It's spring loaded and when pulled out it can be gripped with needle nose pliers, but you need to get the new one hooked in without slipping. Not an easy task.

Bear with me, I've been stripping a 91 pick up all day in the rain. I'm cold, wet, and hungry. I really don't want to go outside again but I don't feel like making dinner for the kids so were off to the fast food place of their choise. I'll get it then.
