Weather cooperated again today, so I went out and messed with some ideas. Just a plain piece of naugahyde in it now, but I figured out the insert needs to be higher. The linkage on the back edge of the shifter comes up above the top of the console when it's in park, so I need some way to cover that when it's forward.
Might have the leather boot made with drawstrings to adjust the top and bottom edges to fit closely around shifter and linkage. Then just make a close fitting plate that can be covered or painted to match the console.

Spent a couple hours this afternoon when I got home from the paying job. Fabricated some patterns for a shifter cover from scrap cardboard and taped it all together to check clearances and fit.
Once I had a good idea of what I wanted I took the cardboard apart and traced it onto a sheet of heavy gauge aluminum. Then with tin snips, sawzall, drill, and file I fabricated this cover. Pope rivetted one side to the top to hold the shape, and made the other side removeable to install it over the shifter.
Haven't decided for sure, but I'll probably cover it with black sheet vinyl to match the console, but for now I'll leave it bare until I'm sure. Got a leather boot for it also, but I'll wait to install that when I'm done.

That's not 30 yr. old dust! That's all brand new under there, and what you're seeing is the new jute backing on the factory repro carpet set where it was cut out for the console and shifter.
The leather boot will hide all that once it's on. It's pretty big at the bottom, and will lay out over all that stuff.

Did you want me to see the dimple where the rivet is? Looks good though!

I think I'm actually going to pull the rivets and install shiny chrome screws in their place. I found this "leather" looking self adhesive material in the shelf paper section at Home Depot. Only $7 for 18"x15' roll! Whatever I want to do I can easily recover it many times over!
Your boot idea worked nicely, and Autozone had them for just $9!
