Default '79 z28 trying to get back on the road

Hey everyone,
I have a '79 z28 that I'm trying to get back out on the road. Recently my dad who owned the car passed away from cancer. While he had cancer the z broke down and he wasn't able to fix it before he passed away. The key wouldn't turn to start the engine, and wouldn't come out of the ignition. After doing some research on the internet it seems like the shift linkage was the problem (automatic trans I know) I think I might have a guy coming to help me fix that because I really don't want to screw it up. The car has been sitting for about 2 1/2 years now. I know that a fuel stabilizer was added about 2 years ago, and the tires are all flat so I need to replace those (I have some pretty bad *** ones from y S10 truck I want to put on), and the battery more than likely needs to be replaced. Can anyone think of anything I would probably need to do before I get this car back on the road so I'm not stuck on the side of the road? mainly precautionary things that I'm not thinking of.
Thanks
Andrew

since it was sitting for years, i would drain the gas tank and rebuild the carb for starters.

Before you try to start it,like mentioned change the oil,and i would even pull the wire from the coil and crank it over several times to make sure everything gets oil so you dont have a dry start.
