Hi all,

Does anyone know where I can find the safety ratings for a 79 Camaro?

Thanks,

Not sure they even had safety ratings similar to what we have today?

On a 1-10 the Camaro got a 73. You will die. Out of 5 stars we got a green clover, blue diamond and purple horseshoe.

MOst all classic cars were built well behind the "safety curve". The 1979 models are much better than earlier classic cars but still no where near today's standards.

They do have; side inrtrusion beams in the doors; collapsable steering colums; dual line brake master cylinders; 3 point seat / shoulder belts; padded dashes; laminated safety glass in ALL windows; disc brakes on the front; crumple zones in the hood; impact absorbant bumpers; and probably more.

The earlier cars, (say like a 1955 Chevrolet or a 1964 Mustang), did not ahve any of these features.

Questions like safety features and fuel mileage are normally never associated with classic cars.

Really i dont know how they stack up. I was just being funny. Our cars werent built with crumple zones. They were built in a time when the thought was built it stronger and it will be safe. When in reality the more solid the car is the more energy is transfered to the driver. Air bags do a great job of this. Newer cars burn off the energy of a collision by folding in on itself and the driver cabin is the stiff part.

In my head I have always thought maybe all the impact stuff is a hox. That it was just a ploy for the automakers to have cars get totaled on impact and require a new vehicle to replace it. Its my own little conspiracy threory.

well. yes our cars are solid.. im doing a little to make my car a little pro street so im going to actually try and make it safer while im at it. roll bar with the side door bars. 4point seat belts. and maybe some sub frames between the firewall and the radiator support + reinforcing the sub frame/engine cradle in the front. i mean it does little for safety but it also has more functionality because im basing my camaro interior on a corvette. (2 seat carpeted back) thats why its getting the roll bar. so maybe it will be a little more safe when its done.........

drive safe.

also if you talk to 1971 he will tell you what a little fender bender did to his camaro. alot more damage than what i did hitting a deer at 45mph and just got a little crack on my 98 firebird
