Default 700r4 Transmission

Has anyone out there put an overdrive transmission like a 700r4 install of the th350?
How much work is involved?

from what i've heard there isn't much to do besides move the crossmoember back a couple of inches, and drill new holes. then get wiring kit so you can use the lockup converter. the length of the driveshaft should also be the same.

why would you do that 700 r 4s are not really built to take any abuse if you wanting to hod rod or race with your car that trans is not made for it.

where did he say he was racing the car?why do you say they can't handle any power? I have friends that do race them, and they run them into the 11s, all day long, with no problems. also the earlier units are a bit weaker than the later models so be sure to get one of the later ones

Rcrx is correct in what he said. it's a pretty easy swap

what kind of powertrain do u have. i'm thinking about about switching to a 700r4, but i'm planning on being over 400hp, posi and gears in the next year. and i don't think i trust the tran over 400, w/out some extensive mods.

I was just going by what I heard on the street that a lot of guys says that 700 r 4s are junk for any kind of horse power.

i agree with 80z/28, if you want to race your car, now were not talking just going to the strip and going down the track once or twice every couple of months, in that case, then ya, they will be okay if they are taken care of, now these days, strip cars, there somewhere around 400hp for a small class of racing, in that case, they're junk, i've been through so many i can't even count them on my fingers anymore, you really want to start looking at like th350's or th400's if you want to race, the 700r4's just won't hold up, even rebuilt ones for the strip aren't that great, all i can really say, is that 700r4 trannys are really madefor everyday city/highway driving, and occasionally beating them a little bit.

I would question them on what they consider "any kind of horsepower" and how much experience thay have with them, or are they just going by "what they hear on the street"?

that is the worse type of advice to listen to. if they haven't seen, or actually had, the experience with those trannys, then they don't know what they are talking about. a lot of people have one or two bad experiences with something (that they usually didn't do right anyway), and try to say everyone else is wrong

at least camaro maniac has experience with them (BTW...what years have you used?), but Blue79ice never said he was racing the car.

one thing I forgot to add in my previous post is that if you have an aftermarket shifter, you can probably just buy the extra detent that you need to use it for overdrive

the 700 r 4 is a nice trans for cruizing and highway driving, but if you think that you can take thats tans out and beat on it it will not hold up, and besides how many guys do you know that race with the 700 r 4 prob not to many. Even if they are built up. So I dont know why that you are getting bend out of shape and defending that trans.. I just saying if blue79ice is wanting to put that trans if for cruizing and highway driving is fine.
