68 Camaro project
I just purchased an awesome 68 Camaro. I was wondering if someone could help me on what the original car was. The VIN says it is V8, and it has the optional U17 ( Special Instrumentation) guage package, which includes the combination tachomether and clock on the right dash pod (with a 5,000 rpm redline on the tach) , plus the auxiliary instrument panel mounted to the console. The car does have a 12 bolt rear. Can someone help me determine if this was an original SS, and if so which engine was originally in the car? The engine now is a 383 stroker.
This car also had original 4 speed, but someont changed it out for a 2 speed racing automatic. I would really like to change it back to a 4 speed muncie. Which muncie would you recomment. Is it any problem putting the Muncie with the stroker engine.
Also, this car has the original trim coded black/ivory houndstooth seats (749), if that helps.
I am a novice and am so excited by my Camaro I just got today, I can't see straight.
Any help you could offer would be appreciated.

RE: 68 Camaro project
Well to start their is no way to tell what engine it was out of the factory because it does not have and codes in the vin or trim tag to i.d. it. One thing I do know is that 12 bolt rearend wasn't standard on SS's until 69'. But you could opition for the twelve bolt in a small block. Sorry but unless you have factory documentation you will probibly never know what it was; but it was an SS. Now for the muncie you can go for the m-20,21, or 22. If all around crusing is what you want then the m-20 is right for you. But if you have gearing 3.73 and up you want a 21 or 22. The difference is that the m22 can withstand high horsepower due to the hardened gears and they are known as rockcrushers because the gears are straighter cut and have a loud distinct hum. The down fall to the m-22 is the all around price because they made thousands less then 20 and 21s. Sorry I couldn't help more.
