Default 2nd gen camaro q's...

I currently have a 1978 Mustang II 302 V8 with performance upgrades, and am going to sell it go buy hopefully an older Camaro. Chevy's are a lot easier to work on than Fords, from my experience especially since I have the Mis engineered mustang.

Anyway, if I were to get a camaro, my plans would be to get at least 400 hp out of it. I know most of the ford blocks are only good for about 450 hp, and is that about how good a '71 camaro's block is?

My dads worker has a mid 70's camaro with 450 hp, runs high 6's low 7's in the 1/8th, but I have no idea if he still has the stock block or not.

SO basically i'm wondering how much power can the Stock block handle? Also what are the V8's that come in these stock? 327 and 350? Thanks you guys.

I'm also part of mustangforums.com due to me owning a mustang so i'm not new to forums, Thanks guys.

It sounds like you are asking, "What horsepower can I get from a Chevy smallblock?". Stock cast iron blocks can be built to handle monsterous amounts of power. When you state that Ford is only good for about 450 hp you must mean naturally aspirated & no nitrous. Assuming that the same restrictions are applied to a SBC, yes you can build for more than 450 hp and the block will handle it. The ways in which it can be done are varied. Ask ten people here how to build 450 hp and you will get ten different answers. Add a bottle or blower/turbo and you can get more. Question is what is in your budget?

Alright thats what I was wondering thanks both of you. I won't really have a budget, i'm 18, and I have plenty of resources to get me that amount of hp. For 5 grand i'll be at about that hp. But then I would nead new gears, and posi. Tranny strong enough for that power?

Pretty much any second gen tranny will take an ungodly amount of abuse, but youll definately need a new tourque converter (B&M, TPI) and new rear gearing.

Didn't they start the 200 metic trans in the mid 70's? The first release of that tranny was junk. Infact I think that was the first class action law suit on a car company forcing them to extend their waranty.

You are going to spend a lot of your budget getting a decent early second gen body.If you are on a buget think about a 3rd gen. A shell can be picked up for next to nothing. I am a big Camaro guy but the 80's mustang is one of the cheapest cars to build into a drag racer. I read a quote some where that said the 80's 5.0 mustangs are to drag racing what the first gen Camaros where in the late 70's and 80's.

IMO theone of the better waysto build a SB chevy is get a 350 4 bolt main and a kit to convert it to a 400 crank. You end up with a 383. With the right heads and cam you can hit 500 HP.

Thanks for the info guys. I can get a loan from a bank maybe for 10 grand if I have a good down payment so I will be able to afford and get a second gen for a I think decent price. And then put the motor on my card, and or another loan.
