Default 1979 Berlinetta Hasn't Been Ran in 13 Years

Hello Everyone,

I recently inherited my late fathers 1979 Berlinetta and I'm looking for some advice on what needs to be done before I try turning it over for the first time in about 13 years. My dad was the original owner, it has the optional 350 V8, automatic transmission and has under 20,000 miles, but the last time it's been out on the road was around 2008 before being parked in his detached garage and it hasn't ran since. I'm putting together a list of what needs to happen before I try turning it over and would appreciate any input or suggestions to make this process go as smooth as possible. I've done a little research and know I need to do the following:
  1. Drain any old gas out of the tank and check to see if the tank is rusting
    • To check for rust I was planning on dropping the gas tank and taking off the sending unit to inspect. While I have the tank off I'm assuming this would be a good time to replace fuel lines, but I'm not sure how to tell if this is needed unless there is obvious corrosion or cracks.
  2. Flush Radiator and inspect and replace any rubber hoses that are damaged.
  3. Change Transmission Fluid (Automatic)
  4. Change Oil
  5. Inspect/Replace Drive Belt
  6. Make sure the engine can rotate freely by manually rotating
    • I read that it's a good idea to take out the spark plugs and put some lubricant (Marvel Mystery Oil) down in the cylinder head and let it sit for a day or so to soak in.
    • Also need to prime the oil pump so that the cams and everything is coated with fresh oil.
  7. Check air intake for mice nests/replace filter
  8. New tires (since they likely have a flat spot from sitting)
  9. New Battery.
If anyone has recommendations for things to add or modify on the above list please let me know. I feel like I should look at the carburetor and fuel filter too, but I'm not sure what I need to inspect about them. The last thing I want to do is miss a step and make things worse when trying to start it.

Thanks in Advance!

Check the brakes and steering and lights to make sure its safe to drive .Like a safety check your State Patrol/ Police would do.

I'd also pull the valve covers when you rotate it by hand and pour some oil down the pushrods to the lifters, make sure none are stuck as you turn it over.

Thank you for the suggestion! I was definitely not giving the safety aspect enough thought.

Good idea! When replacing the valve cover gaskets, do you have a suggestion on gasket material or brand?

I like the rubber gaskets and a light coat of silicone sealer.
