?1978? camaro
i just got another camaro today the vin is 1P87HAL546210 can anyone tell me the year and if its a regular camaro or berlinetta or whatever and the motor that it came with? thanks
Use this to decode your vin
Are you sure that's the correct vin? For 72 - 80 the sixth digit should be a number that tells the year.
3rd and 4th digits (87) means it's a sport's coupe
Vehicle Identification Example: 1Q87U8N515127
First digit is GM Division: 1 = Chevrolet
Second digit is model: Q = Sport Coupe, Rally Sport, and Z28, S = Type LT
Digits 3 & 4 are body type: 87 = 2dr. coupe
Fifth digit is engine code: D = 250ci, L = 350ci, U = 305ci
Sixth digit is model year: 8 = 1978
Seventh digit is N for Norwood assembly, L for Van Nuys.
Last six digits increased one with each car built at each plant.
8th through 13th digits: Sequential production number starting with 100001.
To get the engine information you will need to get the engine VIN off the front of the engine. It's right in front of the passenger side cylinder head on the block. It sticks out like a little ledge. That will tell you if you have a number matching engine and if you do we can find what type of engine it is from that.

Both the "P" and "A" code means it's a 1980.
"H" engine code: 305 155 h.p.
It's a plain-jane 1980 Camaro.
