Default 1974 stereo help

hey guys, i just bought a sony deck and two 6x9 alpines for the rear. I have a few questions. First off, the place i bought it from said they didnt have a harness for the radio, so were do you guys find yours? Also They didnt have the antenna adapter. How do you make your antenna work with an aftermarket radio? Another thing, is there speakers up front?? What size are they? Also what size is an alternator and would I be able to run a 400 watt rms amp and not worry about electrical power issues?

Thanks guys

you should be able to just splice the harness into the original wiring, you just won't have a plug. you should be able to buy the adapter at any good stereo shop

it sounds like the place you used wasn't really a type of place that you should be doing business with. they should have also advised you that you should, in no way, be trying to push 400 watts through 6x9 deck speakers.

go with a 105 amp alternator and you will never have any problems

Ditto to what 1969 SS said. If you bought a "conservatively" rated amp, and push that much into the 6X9s you will cook them. Get a smaller one and use the 400 wattone for a sub or two. A good capacitor is a smart idea, a 1.5-2.0 farad should do you just fine, its a lot less stress on your electrical system.Be sure to use a large gauge wire straight from the battery, with a big fuse (50 or more amp) within 6 inches of the battery to your amp. In the future if you are going to upgrade, look at www.crutchfield.comthey have the best prices, fastshipping, excellent technical advisors, and usually give you the connectors you need for free when you buy from them. Ive been using them for years....

Q logic makes very good enclosures and some front kick panel speaker enclosures, but probably not for that car. trying to put music up front in a '74 is going to be a *****. Good luck with your project.

no im not putting a amp to those speakers. I am planning to put that amp to a cvr in the future and was wondering if the car could handle that much of a draw.

No the place I used is woofersetc.com and they are actually a good place to buy from. They have great customer service. So what should I do about the antenna adapter? Also do I need to worry about getting a harness or does the deck come with some general harness I could use? I havent purchased a deck before. Thanks guys

i'm running an 800w amp to a 65amp alt, and it still works good. i have a cvx hooked up to mine. the front original speaker is a 4x10. i took mine out, and built alittle tray out of 1/2in mdf wood and put two 4in infinity speakers in it. the rear deck i have two 6x9s that i got from a swap meet about two years ago. the headunit adapter you can get at best buy.

Best Buy should have the antenna adapter, and any good car stereo store should haveit too. Im running an alpine head unit with an alpine MRP 550 4 channel bridged into 2 channels, in polk momo 6x9s and 2 eclipse XA1000 class D mono amps into 2 polk momo 10s in my '70.All 3 have the gain set at about 1 o'clock. No problems with the elect. system, and no problems with head lights dimming due to current draw, but I have a 140 amp single wirealternator, and a big capacitor. As long as you plan things out well, you shouldnt have any trouble.

i just installed the stereo and it sounds great. Now the only problem is when i turn off the ignition it erases all the memory on the deck. It completely shuts down the deck. I have both the accesory and the power wires from the deck going both to the power wire so I know thats the problem. I just dont know what wire the accesory wire from the deck goes to...the gray or black? Thanks for the help!

Id suggest getting a volt/ohm meter (20 bucks at radioshack) to test the wires if you dont already have one. They are a must when doing elect. work on cars. It will tell you what has constant power, and what is switched to the ignition.
