Need more info.
Does it do this only after a start up, but goes away after a drive once the engine and exhaust warms up? Could be moisture in the exhaust.
Does it get worse the more you drive the car? That's more of a sign of engine problems.
Does the weather make a difference; hot & humid, cold & damp etc.?
Is your coolant level constantly going down, or no?

it doesn't do it when i first start it up. It takes a few minutes and than starts smoking. I also have some smoke in the engine around the valve cover gaskets and down by one of the plugs.
it stays smoking and doesn't go away but doesn't get worse.

Sounds like a head gasket alright. Check your oil, if there's a lot of grey foamy stuff you are probably getting coolant in the oil as well.
Also look for oil in the radiator, could be either or both depending on where the gasket blew out.
This can kill an engine pretty quick if you keep driving it when it might just be a simple fix by doing a head gasket.
If you determine it is a head gasket you'll want to put a straight edge on the head when you get it off to be sure it's not warped.

Is it using coolant? When you check the radiator (engine cold start running) look for oil floating and look for bubbles. If water gets in the oil, it looks like a chocolate milk shake.
Pull all the spark plugs and check for a discolored plug(s). If it's #1 or #2 that looks bad, that could be a cracked or loose intake manifold or gasket. While the plugs are out, do a full compression test.
