Default 1971 rs?

I just bought a 1971 Camaro that I think is an RS. Everything appears to be correct, but I can't read the tag on the inside of the motor compartment. It has been painted and when I try to scrap it off it appears to be "flaking" off as if it has a plastic coating on it. Is there a coating on it or should I just go ahead and scrap away.

pull the back seat see if you find a build sheet stashed in there if not try above the gas tank.

Do you have any pics?

I'm assuming it has a split bumper and circle parking lights.

The trim tag didn't come painted from the factory. I'd carefully use paint remover with a tiny brush, and mask off the surrounding area of the cowl.
But I think your efforts aren't going to tell you what you want to know, the trim tag didn't receive an RS code.

Above is my new baby. I thought that the trim tag should say Z22 if it is a RS?

Hey, nice looking car, real RS or not. I like that color.
Trim tag code showed L34 SS, L78 SS, Z27 SS, and Z28 codes. 1971 Camaro Trim Tag Identification and Decoding

Great looking car regardless if it's an original RS or not.
