Default 1970 Camaro Dash Replacement

I'm replacing my 1970 Camaro dash with an OER dash. The center and passenger side seems to fit flush against the metal dash piece, but the driver's side (above the instrument cluster) does not fit flush. There is about a half inch gap at the top. It looks like the underneath portion of the dash is hitting the metal dash piece and holding it out so that it does not fit up tightly. It looks like I will have to trim the underneath portion of the OER dash so that it fits around the metal dash portion. Has anyone else had to do this? Is there something easy I'm missing that I need to do to make it fit? Thanks!

DON'T trim the OER dash! There is a spot in the metal on the DSide you'll have to put a small notch in (about a 1/2 in) so that the stud on the DSide of the OER dash will slide into to get it flush all the way across. I have some pics I can put up this evening. I just have to find them. LOL

Oh, welcome to CF

I saw the stud, but it's not hitting there (at least not yet). The old dash had a deep groove where the metal dash piece fit into it. The OER dash does not have nearly as deep of a groove. Looks like I'm going to have to grind about a 1/2 inch groove into the OER dash. If you find photos or have other ideas, I'd appreciate it!

Default Same Dash Problem

I am new at this, but I am having the same problem with the OER dash
being replaced on my 1978 Camaro. Ordered from Ecklers/Ricks Camaros.
OER is telling Ricks Camaros there is not a defect with the dash, But the
guy who is restoring my car says the drivers side will have about 1/2"
gap. The instructions do not state anything about any modifications
and cutting the new dash for the difference. HELP............

I don't know what to tell you guys without seeing pics. From my own experience I know that the metal needs to be notched for the stud on the drivers-side to slip into. If you don't do this there will be about a half inch gap. I got mine in and was super pleased with the fit. All my holes for the lower dash were spot on also once I realized they were covered by excess plastic. Any chance you could put up some pics MStout?

I ended up using a razor blade knife to carve out a deeper groove (~1/2 inch deep and ~12 inches long) into the OER dash so that it would slide over the metal dash component. It worked...
