1968 SS396 verification
Ive had a 68 Camaro since 1990 sitting in my garage.
I was told when I bought it that it was beleived to be a 396 car.
It has 4 piston disc brakes on the front and I beleive it has the larger heater core assembly. I was told that the big blocks were the only ones that came with 4 piston brakes.
I know the numbers on the 68 are not any help, or at least I was always told this.
Is there any other way that I can verifythe motor size or SS package?
The car is basically a shell that Ibackhalved in the early nineties with intentions of tubbing.
I want to start working on it again, but before I do I want to know if I should replace the floor pan and go original.

www.mortec.com for the numbers. You might want to get a 'white book' as well.

RE: 1968 SS396 verification
Thanks for the help, but that is just a list of block casting numbers.
I need to find out if my car came with a big block by the rolling chassis that I have.
I do not havethe motor, but I know where I can get a correct date 68 396.
But I will only purchase this motorif I am sure the car came with one like it.
Otherwise, its getting a 500" plusBB.

Ill get the numbers today and post.
In the past I have looked up the numbers on the cowl using the classic Camaro numbers books and was able to come up with basic things like when and where the car was built, color andinterior options.
I could not find anything on the cowl that references engine size or the SS option.
I havent came up with anything that unmistakably
declares this car as a 396.
If you or anyone else can break down the numbers on the cowl to show motor size, I would greatly appreciate it.

I found out just what I thought.
Unless you have original documentation and/or the original motor forthe car, a 68 has no proof of SS or motor size other than V8 on the trim tag.
Unfortunately I have none of the above.
Nothing stupid about it, I bought the car because it was a Camaro, not an SS 396.
Although it would be a nice bonus if it were.

The 'stupidity should be painfull' is just my signiture, general statement. lol The 68 cowl tag would say something like Z22, or it will have an X## code, this is for the RS style, which is also the SS. I could stand corrected though. The 68 with that RPO came with either a 350 or 396. I think you are asking what engine came from the factory for this car? And you are also mostly correct by saying that there really is no difinitive way of knowing with out origional documents. SS came with only those two engines, also special to the 68 SS were special hoods, with what is called 'simulated carburation stacks' there were four per unit, two units per hood. Also try www.nastyz28.com there is links there to a bunch of info as well. Good luck!

RE: 1968 SS396 verification
the 4 piston discs where on anything that had discs in 67-68.
The heater core will be about the only thing that will help with the BB but could have been changed, the heater hose tubes will be coming out closer to the fender on the BB they will poke through the cover, the SB will poke through the firewall just at the end of the cover. If someone took a SB and changed it to a BB then they would have had to weld up the SB holes in the firewall to do it right. Unless it has A/C then the heater core is different
