Default Tire sizes for those running 14" Rallies

New tires are in order for the '69 Camaro, and it still has the old F70/14 designation on stock 14-inch rally wheels. I am finding conflicting information from the retail tire joints about what size that actually converts to. So,, I'm hoping someone here can help me out with the sizing conversion, and maybe tell me what they're running on their rally wheels.

This is for my parents who are own the '69 and are working on getting the car up and running after many years of sitting in the garage. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me/them out.

My '71 had 14" rallye wheels on it when I bought it in 1973. Also with F70 tires. I used to run 205's on it, but eventually the selection of 14" tires became so weak that I had to stop running them. Not a lot of 14" tire variety at most tire stores today.

Thanks for all the help, gang! It will be extremely useful. I know they had concerns about what tire size would end up rubbing up front with the wheels turned, so that is good to know.

They wound up buying 215/70/R14 tires that fit real good and matched those F70s. Thanks again for the helpful info.

As a follow-up on this thread, I need to replace my 30yr old F70-14s on my '69 RS too. Yes, they've been on the road that long, only 20yrs past due for replacement. Been in the garage that long too. And they still look good.

So the current tires on the stock 14x6 rallye rims measure 26in diameter at the crown and I figure they'd be about 26.44 with full tread. Section width measures 8.875in. So these are some good size tires I guess. For comparison the specs on the current Firestone Wide Oval F70-14 are 26.2in diameter and 8.3in section width.

I'm going to go with the BF Goodrich Radial TAs and I've gotten various recommendations for radial sizes as well and seen debates between the 215 and 225. The BFG specs for P225/70R14 are diameter 26.5, and section width 9in on 6.5in rims. That seems to be the closest match to my current tires. I'm assuming the width will be a little lower on 6in rims but don't know how much. The specs for the P215/70R14 are 25.9in diameter and section width 8.7in on 6.5in rims.

Anybody have any other experiences to add?

Well, learn something new everyday. Or in this case every 30 years or so. Had this car for over that long and just found out the rear rims are 14x7. Never noticed before and never put on enough miles to rotate. Back in the day it was common to buy an extra set of rims to keep the snow tires on. The original owner must have bought the extra pair as 14x7 (snows are on the 14x6). Even more reason to go with the P225/70R14 all around which should match the F70-14s size all around.
