ok, so i got the balancer plate and it didnt fit. it was too long and wasnt sitting flush with the flywheel. so i called the guy and sent it back to him and he sent me a offset one. got it today and still didnt fit....wth....so i counted the teeth on my flywheel and found out it is a 152 teeth. dont know if i can just buy a 168 teeth flywheel and be ok with the clearance on my bell housing....anybody has any info?....thanks ahead.
btw...just called jegs and the balance plate kit you were referring to is only for automatic flex plates...not meant for manual flywheel....
so now i need a flywheel, but want to make sure it will clear my bell housing since it will be a little bigger flywheel....anybody done this before?

Hmmm, the paragraph description on Jeg's site says flexplate or flywheel. Didn't mean to mislead you. But I have read before where guys have used the plate with a flywheel. I haven't tried that one myself.
Your 153 tooth (you missed one) flywheel is 12 3/4" diameter, the 168 tooth is 14". Measure and see if you have at least an extra 5/8" (half the difference) all around, between your flywheel and bellhousing. Also, yours has the straight across starter motor mount. The 168 tooth takes the staggered mount, which means you'll have to have another mount hole drilled and tapped in your block if yours isn't dual drilled. But why go through all that when you can just buy a 153 tooth 400 external balance flywheel?

I hope he know that the balance plate goes on the crank first and then on put on the fly wheel. I never found a bell housing that would not take the bigger fly wheel or flex plate. I did have a problem with the dust cover on the bottom of the housing on a glide. Just ditched the cover and all was well. Also that odd hole thats not tapped for a bolt should have a dowel pin in it to put the flex plate or fly wheel on the correct way. Wouldn't be the first time some one forgot to do that and had problems along with the 400 balancer on the front.

Yea...i tried looking for a 153 tooth flywheel, but dont know if they make one for the sbc 400. I couldnt find one....
Yes, i am putting it in the correct spot....its not fitting when i bolt the flywheel on because the flywheel seems smaller than the plate.

I figured (hoped) you would have noticed a slight clutch interference problem if trying the balance plate on the wrong side.
Pick a flywheel, any flywheel...read the descriptions though, a couple of them aren't external balance: CHEVROLET 6.6L/400 Flywheels - 153-tooth Ring Gear Tooth Quantity - SummitRacing.com

ok....im trying to order the correct flywheel....so do i order a flywheel for sbc400 or sbc350? 1 piece rear main or 2piece rear main? obviously its gonna be a exteranally balanced....

Flywheel for a 400, 153 tooth.
1 or 2 piece main depends on the generation of block you have.
If it's an older type block, it would be 2 piece. But if the rear main seal is a solid circle that's pressed into an aluminum housing that bolts to the block, then it's a 1 piece.

I didn't realize they made a 1 piece 400 block. I know the oil pans are different on the 350 1piece and the older 2 piece 350's.
