1967 SS
Hello I'm a newbe here. I pretty much know the answer to this ?. How ever,I have a 67 SS. I bought it in 75 for my high school car and have stored it since. I decided to save the motor and took it to a shop to put a latter model 350 in to save the original. ( it was starting to have some issues) Well some one stole my engine from the shop. Yea!! it sucks, YEA IT REALLY SUCKS!!!! but I sort have moved on.( sort of) I know I wont ever have perfect matching numbers anymore, however would a 67 350 help my value, or should I not bother and stick with the new motor I put in. A 1974 350 with a 327 350 vette cam and 202 heads and edelbrok and holly Blah blah blah!!! The reason for this is a have found a 67 coded 350 block for sale.
Thanks

It really doesn't matter much what year 350 that you have in it now. Only the original engine with the correct VIN will increase the desirability value. Values are based on which combination and style package that you have and the condition of the car. Cars with the same or similar style/condition will be worth about the same.

Take the block to a machine shop resurface the block and stamp in your own vin... I know it's cheating but you do what you gotta sometimes...

It is much more common then you think. You have any idea how few car made it out of the 70's without a blown motor?I was around in the 70's most cars did not make it 2 years no less 30 without a engine swap. There are more first gen numbers matching camaros now then there was in the 80s. I can remember back in 1989 I did some work for a collector. He showed me before and after pics of a 57 chev ragwith duel four barrels. The before picture was a desert caucus with no engine or tranny the finish car was all numbers matching80K car. I ask how he found the engine.
He smiled and you knowGM stamped that on the block, the stamping machine was scraped out in the mid 70's some very smart restorer found it and put it back in service. Back then this was the only way to insure correct font and alignment. It costabout 500 bucks and you could get you block re stamped with the original machine. Back then there where very few small blocks out there that was worth the $500 plus shipping just to get number matching.
It is becoming more common knowledge. I have seem ebay auction stating Car come with correct casting with correct date code for car. They only reason for that is to make it a numbers matching car. I have even heard talk about pro welders changing the casting numbers. Now can can see why a fully documented numbers matching car brings more money the a just numbers matching cars.
ILLEGAL, Yes so is putting a penny on a railroad track, or those machines the bend the crap out of thepenny. It was neverthe intent of the law to stop people from restoring cars with legally purchased parts. Those vin lawsare in place to stop people from stealing parts and changing the vin. You ever heard of someone being arrested for making their car number matching without anything being stolen?Notheft no crime. I am sure if you wentto a DA because you you found out your numbers matchingpurchase was not realnumbers matching he would say it was a civil matter.
Just my opinion tho

http://www.dcdlaw.net/carfraud.htmI bet if you contact these guy's they would have a diferent take on it. As for changing a vin # that is a federal offence not a civil matter.Contact any police department for info on that. For trim tag's oklahoma has become the first state to pass laws against swapping them for any reason ! http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache
