Transmission Adjustment

Transmission Adjustment
So... with a Chilton's or guidance, I can tackle just about anything, even though I'm a rookie, and I've made it through valve adjustments and similar maintenance on the bike, alternator replacements, carb adjustments, etc., but I'm about to tackle something I've never dealt with before and thought I'd get some tips. Probably something you guys would consider as one of the simplest procedures ever, but it's new to me.
I've got a TH350 transmission in my beast, with the horseshoe shifter, and it's not aligned properly to hit P/R/N/3/2/1 as indicated inside the car. I can get park all the way up, and dropping this shifter ALL the way back, I can catch drive (3), but I usually have to fish for reverse and neutral in between, and it actually seems like they're in different spots at times. When I get the chance to get this thing up on the rack this weekend, what am I looking for?
Edit: To answer a question before it's asked - I've just had the car about a week, passed down through family, so no I didn't even help install it.

There is a lever mounted to the shaft on the trans that the end of the shifter cable is attached to. The nut that holds the lever on may have come loose. There is also a bracket that holds the housing of the cable, which is held on by a couple of the pan bolts. That may have come loose too. Make sure all is tight, then put the trans in neutral. If the shifter isn't in neutral but the trans is, remove the cable end at the trans, put the shifter in neutral, and adjust the cable accordingly.

Sweet, thanks for the quick response! Hoping to have this ironed out tomorrow so I can get focused on this "too quiet" exhaust and the non-functioning dash lights. At least I can say I know what I'm diving into in those areas while I wait for the assembly manual to arrive.

A lot of the assembly was loose up near the shifter, and the retainer clip had come off where it should have been holding down the housing as well. Didn't have the exact horseshoe clip, but found one laying around for an old brake assembly that was of the correct (enough) size and tapped that on. All is well, and turned out much easier than I expected!
Thanks for the diagram and quick explanation, helped me find everything I needed right away!
