Default retrofitted trans.

as most here know the 1st gen camaro comes with a 4speed, which is fine. I would like to have a 6 speed, but im also on a budget. what i'm thinking of doing is going to a salvage yard and getting a transmission off a wrecked corvette or 5th gen...something like that. but those engines don't make the power capacity necessary, so what should i do. should I add an aftermarket clutch kit, or am i limited by the housing

5th and 6th gen corvette transes are 100% different, they are located in the back of the car, where every othre car has a differential.

late 4th gen T56's are hard to come by cheeply, unless you know people or get lucky and find somebody trying to 'get rid' of one, or dont know what theyve got.
T56's are pretty potent transes.. they can handle a good amount of torque but based on youre signature if you have a 675hp camaro you'll need to get it beefed up a piece..

and the swap is definitely possible.. youll need a gen 1 or LT1 bell housing and the proper release bearing and shifter. and a lotta know how for fabrication (mounts, linkage, etc)
im not sure if theres a mechanical adapter for a VSS, so u might need an aftermarket speedometer.

go to LS1tech, they have lots of info there,
I'm guessing that you're wanting to put this behind the motor in your sig.
what you need to look for is a t56 from a 94-97 camaro/firebird, as they came with the LT1 motor, which is similar to our 350sbc's. LSx cars, the tranny had a completely different bolt pattern and you would need a adapter plate of some sort.
T56 swaps are no way a cheap thing, doing one into my 84Z and have about 1700 in parts so far, luckily i stumbled across a T56 that was already behind a early sbc, but converting from a auto to 6speed, so I had to get pedals, master/slave hydraulics, driveshaft, and electronic speedo from autometer (programable), and electrical connector plugs for the trans= vss(speed sensor),reverse lock-out, and back up lights, trans cross member

stay away from 93 camaro t56s, as they were the viper trans and only rated for 350ft lbs trq,
I've seen 94-97 t56s live behind 450+ rwhp on some cars and take a beating on the track as well.
