Default Rear Axle

I am opening a new thread for the rear axle on my 68.
I have several concerns with it.
It's a10 bolts single leaf with 3 leaves.
Marked 3894859NF and CM57
I can't open the square fill plug
The teeths seems to rattle a bit
Transmission shaft had about 1" of play when everything was on the car (when turning the shaft it was moving by about 3/4-1")
I will have to have it checked locally to estimate it's real condition.
I would like to refinish it but it's muddy, greasy and am not sure how I can degrease it so I can paint it...
So a lot of work to still have a 10 bolt at the end of the day(s)

I saw this page https://www.moserengineering.com/12-...d-package.item
About 2.000$
Anyone would like to dig into that and tell me what option I'd need. I'd appreciate.

What value will a 12 bolts add to the car?

Transmission shaft? I think you mean driveshaft, the long shaft with u-joints between the trans and the rear end.
If that's the case that much movement is fairly normal with the trans out of gear.

Sorry yes driveshaft. It has this kind of movement when it was in the car and the car on its wheels.

Just an FYI, not all 10 bolts are the same. GM had a 7.5/7.6, 8.2, and 8.5/8.6 10 bolt. You more than likely have the 8.5 and it's a very strong axle even stock. Built, it can handle what a 12 bolt can.

You're correct, it's well a 8.5" on the car. I am not that much concerned with the fact that it's a 10 bolts, I could live with it easily.
No the problem is the amount of work required and that it's originally a single leaf axle.
I am considering having a new one installed but there is a lot of options ! So again if anyone can help with th link I provided on the first message, I would appreciate;

Then I would probably need a new set of leaf springs. But which one. 4 or 5 leaf, what style? I see that some are sold as "improved handling". What do I need?

My car has a single leaf rear axle but installed is a 3 leaf spring.
Am I correct in assuming that we can use 3 leaf springs on single leaf axles (with spacers) and that a multi leaf axle will use 5 leaf springs?

Those 3-leaf springs are probably the JC Whitney replacements made by Eaton Spring as they did away with the rubber pads installed on the OE mono-leaf/perch design.

the 68`s came with an 8.2 rear end of which are weak .You can replace it with an 8.5 10 bolt from a 1973-4 Nova .And or a 12 bolt from a 1968-71 Nova and or 1967-9 Camaro .Original and or aftermarket.I have used the original 8.5 10 bolt housing rebuilt with upgrades behind a 500 HP small block/Super T-10 for years with no issues,

Everett
you mentionned before JC Whitney on my "Rear Leaf Pads" thread.
You said then "I believe no pads required with three-leaf springs. I could be mistaken."
I don't think that no pads as I never saw in my very limited experience rear leaf springs with no pads.

In any case Eckler's sell a conversion mono to multi leaf but I am not sure if you use it on a mono leaf axle with 3 springs or with 5 springs.
In any case it comes with a plate that would allow the use of multi leaf pads (with centering stud) in a multi leaf perch (with no hole in the middle)
Part #: 33-212620-1
Camaro Leaf Spring Conversion Kit, Mono To Multi, Detroit Speed, 1967-1969

Zspoiler, I have well a 8.5-10 bolts axle. I am not sure if I keep it, restore it or order a Moser engineering 12 bolts.
