Default Steering Column Noise

I have a 1968 Camaro that I just finished putting on a new carburetor. Once the carb job was done I picked up a new steering column noise that is evident at speeds above 25 mph. The noise seems to be coming from the steering column on the driver side of the of the firewall and is in rhythm with the speed of the car, the sound gets louder and faster as the car goes faster…? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks for the help.

Sounds like you may have a noisy speedometer. The noise could also be caused by a dry or sticky speedo cable. Does the needle on the speedo bounce at all?

Default Noise

The speedo does bounce a little bit at lower speeds and does not reflect the actual speed at the upper range. Can I swap out the part easily to see if this is the problem? Thanks for the help.

You can pop the cable off the back of the speedo, then take it for a drive and see if the noise went away.
While it's apart, you might as well pull the inner cable out of the housing, clean it well with a solvent such as brake cleaner, re-lube it with speedo cable lube, slide the cable back in and turn it to engage it into the trans gear, and reattach to the speedo. If you still get a bounce, either your cable is kinked (check for that when it's out), or it's the speedo itself that's funky.
