Default Pillar Post Trim

Got a 68' with the original inner pillar post trim. The vinyl is in good condition and can be defiantly be used. The only problem is the inner steel core that has a lot of surface rust and really needs to be cleaned. I would like to remove the steel core, but they are glued to the inside/core foam. One of the steel panels has almost come loose and the other is still firmly attached. Is it possible to remove the steel core and reinstall without ruining the foam and/or lining? Don't have pic's now, but can get one if needed.

Thought I would repost this since it's been a while. Still nothing I could find on line in restoring the original. Again, the vinyl is in good condition, but the inner steel core that has a lot of surface rust. Before I just dive into it and remove the metal core, I hope someone has work on these before. Any advise would help.
