What did I buy? '69
Lots of good info guys. I appreciate it. We had another 69 camaro we sold a few years ago that had a 327. It did all right, but my buddy had a 69 with a 454 and you definately know the differance when you rode in his car. I want this car to cruise in on nice daze.. show off and have fun. I dont need nor want the horse power (female driver) .. I want the thump, vibration and roar of a big block withtwin flowmasters when I pull up next to one of them damn new mustangs that are thicker than the fleas on an old tick hound around here.... I also want to make twin '69 and '09 camaros.. yep, same yellow as in the transformer movie..That movie got me stirred up for another '69 and a week after I watched the movie this car kinda fell in my lap.... thats wierd so I will go for it. Stay tuned for the Bumble Bee transformer '69
Anyway, enough of that crap and on to the meat and potatoes, I think found a BB engine. The stats for it are below. He said it was good for a 4-speed. He said I would have to get a high stall torque converter 2500-2800 if I wanted to run a TH400 behind it since it has a roller cam in it. But he said it was best to get the little lady a nice little pretty different car and keep the 4-speed with this engine. I want the engine and the auto so that is the direction I will head. He was a real nice guy, but at $2,300obo it seems to be a great deal for a ready made big block, complete. He said the heads were iron, but it had 2.19 intake adn 1.88 exhaust stainless valves. Other info as below...
****"454 cid Chevy motor, condition NEW rebuilt, all the best, roller cam, roller lifters, roller rockers, forged pistons, arp bolts, hei ign., H.D. oilpump, 800cfm Holley carb., flywheel, reverse rotation water pump for serpentine belt set-up.etc etc. Come and see, has been in dry storage for last 7 years. Is streetable with a stick trans.10 to 1 comp. ratio, true roller, stick flywheel, block hugger headers, new never run, $2300.00 obo."*****
Whatcha guys think of this motor? Any comments or questions I should ask him?? I have yet to go see it but I talked to him a while on the phone. I will be asking him to pull at least one head off of it so I can see the cylinders since it has sat for so long. He used to own a shop and is retired.. this engine was built for a guy that didnt pay so he kept it. Is theere a way of taking this motor, and exchanging the cam with a mild cam and mellowing out the roll a bit??? I will try it in the car as is, then go from there. He said a stall converter will require me to rev the motor before in engages the tranny and that does not seem to be quite so smooth..

Hmm, maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way.
I'm staying with a manual so my wife CAN'T drive it.

Iamgman, if the guy used quality components, it's not a bad deal at all. You mentioned a carb, does it have an intake manifold too? If so, what kind? And I would run it as is like you mentioned, you may just like it. What are the specs of the cam? If it is too wild for you, you can always swap ina different cam and lifters. That reverse rotation water pump isn't going to work if you are going to set up the other components the conventional way. The reverse pump would be used for a newer style, idler/tensionerbelt system, and I don't know why you would want to go thatroute anyway. I put serpentine on mine, replacing the standard pulleys. Before that, when the engine would hit higher rpm's, the v-belt would zing right off. A larger alternator pulley took care of that problem, but I didn't like underdriving the alternator that much.
