Default VIN's 124... vs. 123...

I have come across some recent (2-3 year old) "restorations" that have a V8 in them and look very nice. Some cloned to be SS and possibly RS. However, the VIN indicates that they were born 6-cylinders. Some have said to stay away from such conversions but I am not sure why. Is there a reason, other than investment value perhaps, that "124..." cars are better than "123..." cars? They are the same body...right? I figured that a "123..." car might be "nicer" in that I would not expect it to have seen as much abuse as the performance models. But, the one's I know about have had one or both quarters replaced so how good could the condition of the car been prior to the restoration? One that I think looks particularly interesting appears to be an RS and has "123..." beginning the VIN. As I have read, any Camaro could be ordered with the RS appearance option. Anyone know how many 6 cylinder cars with the RS option were produced? I figured it would be sort of a pain to take a regular coupe and clone it an RS.

Default RE: VIN

Thank you for the advice. I am not purchasing for an investment or anything. Just a nice solid car that I can drive, enjoy, and teach my kids a little.
