Default Tremec 5 vs Muncie 5 on 396cid

I looked at 68 camaro with Tremec 5. it was supposedly rebuilt about 8 years ago. for 396cid, what are your opinions? I've seen many cars with M5 but not with T5. Thanks.

What Muncie 5 speed would that be? The T5 isn't very heavy duty for going behind a 396, unless you plan on driving the car like a granny. You sure you're not thinking about the Tremec TKO 500/600 as the good one, which it is.

For a 396 or a healthy small block for that matter, the TKO is a good trans to beat up on, the T5 isn't. Both are Tremec.

also, wihich one, in your opinion, would be better behind a 396 (12-bolt, 3.42posi), TKO 500 or Muncie M20. I do not drive like a granny but not like mad man either.

I believe the torque rating of the M20 was 375. With the TKO 500 & 600, the model numbers are their torque rating. Keep in mind though, that torque ratings are based on the trans being able to withstand that amount of torque for 24 hours straight. So 375 doesn't make it a slouch, but you still could break it if you like dumping the clutch. If you're mostly after durability numbers, the choice is simple. Having overdrive is a bonus with the TKO, but they do cost more than an old M20..
