Timing Way Out
Finallly getting a chance to look the Camaro over carefully and work out all the little "annoying" problems out.
Today I decided to check the timing. I had to check it a few times to make sure I was not doing anything wrong...but I get the same reading evry time. The timimg is way too advanced....probably 15 degrees or more.
Shop Manual says 4 degrees for a 1968 327 with a 4 barrel carb and a Powerglide.
Now I have been told that a slightly more agreesive cam was used in the car, the heads are "double hump", the intake has been changed to a Holly as has the carb. Having said that, does that mean that it should be running at a faster idle (which it is) and that the timing should be so far advanced?

Depending on your setup, you might be able to get away with a base timing of more than 4 BTDC. 15 is rather high. First, I would disconnect the vacuum advance hose from the distributor and see if it's pulling vacuum at idle. If the idle slows down as soon as you remove the hose, that would mean it is. It's possible the advance is hooked up to full manifold vacuum.
