reassembled 327,leaking coolant
Tore down the exterior of 68 327. heads stayed on, replaced water pump, removed and replaced harmonic balancer, replaced seal on timing chain cover. More stuff on the other end,but not important to this post. Reinstalled in car, while filling radiator, begin pouring out from what looks like seal between the timing cover and block. The level where it looked like it was coming from was approximately the same height as the crankshaft. I'm not sure there should even be fluid there. any suggestions before I pull the balancer again?
How about a little more history on the engine.
This was a running engine from your car and not a used engine you picked up somewhere correct?
Reason I ask is there are no freeze plugs etc. behind the timing cover so if coolant is actually coming from there it may be a cracked block, check the oil for coolant contamination.
Did you replace with a new water pump? Even if you did see below especially if it's a chrome pump.
Three things to check, the plate on the back of the water pump can be the culprit, fairly common failure and might look like it's coming from the timing cover.
Water pump bolts should have some sealant on the threads, they can leak as well.
Check the
little weep hole on the bottom of the pump, if it's leaking there the pump is junk.

Thanks for your reply, but I found the issue-mechanic dumbassery! I took the water pump off, ready to pull the timing cover and reseal it, and found the wrong gasket on the pump. I used identical gaskets on both sides, but one side had a second coolant port, which was just pouring coolant.
Reassembled, filled with coolant, no leaks. I'm going to let it sit overnight and look for leaks before I continue.
