Rear End Noise on '68
I have a 68 conv that has an annoying "clanging" rear end noise that appears to be coming from both left and right rear drums. Noise only occurs when I go over a bump.
The car has all new rear brake parts, assembled correctly and inspected by a mechanic. The parking brake cable are brand new stainless steel with new supports. It has brand new shocks, shock mounts, brand new multi-leaf spring with new perches, U-bolts, bushings and shackles. All have been correctly assembled.
I have used a Detroit Speed mounting kit as my rear axle was initially intended for mono-leaf springs. I have used the correct multi-leaf shock plates. The heavy-duty shocks have free travel and are not over-extended.
The exhaust system is secure and well clear of chassis, fender, shocks and springs. I have repeatedly inspected everything from the exhaust to the shocks to brake lines and cables. I have removed the spare and jack to eliminate them as the culprits.
The noise appears to be coming from the drums. With the car on jacks, I rock the rear wheels forward and back and a noise that sounds similar to the clanging can be heard. Of course I cannot reproduce the jolt that the car gets going over a bump...but the sound is similar.
I am speculating, but could it be that the mechanism that operates the parking brake be responsible? If not, what else can I do to locate the source of this noise?
BTW, I inspected the vibration dampers and they are secured well into their position with absolutely no play.

Just a couple of "guesses"...
Rear wheel bearings, can you feel any excessive slop if you try to rock/twist a tire (not rotate)?
Too much differential play and/or worn and sloppy carrier bearings. Is yours an open diff? That'll also give you more slop from the spider gears.
Oh, and the threads are fine being separate, the two noises may be caused by different things.

Good guesses, Chuck.
By "open" you mean not Posi? I do not have a posi rear axle. For whatever its worth, it is a Series 2 carrier with 2.73 gears. (At least according to the decoded stamp on the axle housing.)
So to check the rear wheel bearing I am looking for unusual motion side to side and up and down at the wheel, as opposed to rotational play? In otherwords pushing the opposite sides of the wheel to determine if there is slop in either the end wheel bearing or the carrier bearing inside the dif..(right?)
Thanks,
Vic
