Default Radiator Issue/coolant leak

I recently had my 69 Camaro with a 427 BB in the shop to have some gauges installed (temp, oil pressure, volt). The mechanic called and told me the car was done so I picked it up and drove it home...about 15-20 miles. The temp gauge didn't go above 185 the entire ride home but when I parked in my garage and popped the hood and there was antifreeze spewing from the radiator cap and also spewing from the overflow tank. The cap and overflow were recently installed and are brand new. Does anyone know why the coolant would be squirting from the overflow and radiator cap when the temp of the motor never got above 185? And the air temp was only 78 degrees. I called the mechanic and he said it was probably an air pocket. When I dropped the car off to get the gauges installed the air temp was 95 degrees and there was no antifreeze coming from the cap or overflow

Does the mechanic think he may have created an air pocket? Where did he install the sending unit? Keep in mind that the sending unit reads coolant temperature, not air temperature. So, if the probe of the sending unit wasn't in coolant, your engine was likely running way hotter than the temperature your gauge was mis-reading.

When I called the mechanic and told him about it he said it sounds like and air pocket. The sending unit is in the side of the block. I was driving the car before he installed the temp gauge and it wasn't spewing antifreeze at all so thats why i think it may be air in the system.

Maybe the coolant was low. Sometimes air can get trapped after draining and refilling, resulting in low coolant and overheating. Usually due to cheap thermostat that doesn't have a small air bleed hole. Google "thermostat air bleed hole" to see some pics for comparison to your thermostat. If yours has no air bleed hole, get one that does.
