Smile possible 69 z28 purchase

I have located a 69 z28 one owner car that appears to be all origional motor tranny and rear end... He has the proteco plate and build sheet. The car has some bondo on the rear quarter and a little rust behind the front quaters. supposedly 84000 miles and runs. sitting in the sun forever.. It was red / black with a black vinal top. now pink with the top gone and a litttle surface rust... this is utah car and the rust is not to bad?? The stubborn owner wants 30K and is not motivated to sell it... Is this a fair price if it is all there like it seems to be.? I will double check everything before any cash is exchanged.. I am not looking for a quick flip, I am just having a hard time paying 30K for a beater. I am hoping to spend another 15k and drive / own it. the idea of being the second owner feels good??? Any thoughts. Thanks

A well restored, numbers matching Z/28 might fetch upwards of $40k. With what you're anticipating putting into this one (if you don't go over budget) it will put you over it's value. But, it does have a few things going for it such as being an original owner car, protecto plate, build sheet. You wouldn't be the first who's put more money in a car than what it's worth. These kinds of cars means something more to those of us who grew up with them in our younger years. As the buying public gets older, will the car's value ever reach a ceiling to where you won't come out ahead in the future? Possibly, but nobody can say where or when.

I think I agree. I made the mistake of going on the Hagarty website which values the car from 60-140k cleaned up. I was thinking the build sheet and protecto plate made it extra special. Thanks for the comment...... Sweet car you have..

Car was worth 30k in 2007. Owner like to see the peak numbers and stop paying attention when the priced start falling. I do think 20k would be reasonable IF it is numbers matching. You really want to check out all the numbers on the motor. 302 is a great engine but these were sold at race car and many had engine swaps before 1970.

Original owner? so you are dealing with a 70 year old man?

Your 15K restoration is going to be a lower end restore. Even then that is you doing most of the grunt work.

I am in the middle of a partial restore and so far parts top 20k and that's just the parts. All the little screws bolts and trim add up faster than you think and I did not do a full on restore... Parts would top 30k and another 10-20k farming out the bead blasting and paint work.. So if you can do most of the work have help at times and can spend most everyday for two to three months on it yourself. I would figure the full on restoration will set you back 50k when its all said and done if you do most of the work..

Thanks for the input. I totally agree with your numbers on both parts and labor. Yes the owner is retired no wife or kids. it is just sitting in the sun surrounded by junk... It looks like an episode from hoarders.. I think I will just check back in a few months. My offer just went down to 12K... Thanks again.
