Default Posi Question

Hey guys trying to build up my 9" Rear end and I am wondering what type of true trac locker I should use. They make the clutch type locker and they have the gear type locker. The price isn't really an issue as far as the difference. The clutch type is 325 and the gear type is 425-450. I have heard though that the gear type will make clicking noises when going around corners and that the clutch type won't. Has anyone used both of these types and what are the advantages to each. Is the main advantage just that the gear locker is stronger?

the gear type is a stronger locker. the only downside is the clicking noise, but i think its only noticable when ur doing tight corners like when parking and whatnot.

Default RE: Posi Question

The pros of the gear (helical) type diffs are they don't ever require rebuilding, they generate less heat (more important for oval track & road racing) and they don't require a special gear oil. The downside is they only work when both wheels have some traction, so if for instance one wheel gets airborn the unit will act like an open diff. Also, I've been told that they aren't as desirable for drag racing - I assume that's because they don't always distribute the power perfectly evenly, and will tend to try to steer the car more than a clutch type or locked diff, but that's just an educated guess, maybe someone can confirm that. Pros & consare pretty much the opposite for the clutch type - will require rebuilding, more heat, special oils, but better for drag racing.
