Default Needle in a haystack???? (long story)

Hey guys, new to the forum. Thought this would be the best place to start trying to find out the question I'm about ready to ask.

First off, I'm not new to the world of first gens. My dad has raised me around them as he's owned many. I know the history and have been apart of it owning a 69 base model (6cyl/3onthetree)...and have owned many 3rd and 4th gens.

So today I came across an individual that has quite a collection. I won't go into details on what he has and I won't say how I know him as I want to keep that information away from the main subject. He pulled up in one of his 1st gens that I haven't seen yet. It's a 1967 badged as an SS. No biggie, car is in great shape. No body flaws, interior is not bad. Seats are showing some wear...I'd say a 8-9/10 for how many years it's been alive. Has only 92k original miles on it. Also it is said to have a Rockcrusher 4 speed with a 4:10 posi.

After opening the hood, the story came out like this. "Take a good look at this as it's 1 of only 3 ever made from Chevrolet. This is a DZ302/Z28 engine that was put in this SS. This car was asked to be put in a museum as Chevrolet typed out a letter stating this and they were willing to buy the car back from me. I said thanks but no as you just raised the price tag of this car 10 fold." As he was telling me the story I was trying to look for the code on the block but could only make out a CE as the first letters. Everything after that was severly faded.

Exact words. At first and I think I still am not really believing this story but the one point that makes me think other wise is that chevrolet doesn't have any living proof (records) dating back this far. I didn't ask him to see the letter but I will in the future as it's framed and hanging on the wall of his garage. (so he says) All I know from reading and researching is that the only car that received the 302 was the 67 1/2's Z28's.

I know what most responses are probably going to be....pretty much it's bs. But I was hoping to find someone on here (another needle in a haystack) that might know about this if it is true.

So any of you guys know of anything like this. If it's a true story and I actually see this letter, I indeed have found a needle in a haystack.

Thanks for your help and maybe direction on how I can find out if this is true.

As far as I know only '67-'69 Z28's got the 302 and 302/4spds were the only engine/trans options available in the '67-'69 Z28's,some were cross ram dual quad carb'd with angle plug heads etc but all were 302/4spd cars.
A '67 SS should be a 350,the first car to get the 350 engine and the first and only car to get a 350 in '67.

"This is a DZ302/Z28 engine that was put in this SS".
And......so what? For starters, the "CE" code stamped on the block stands for "Crate Engine".....it's a replacement block. So sure, someone (like the car's owner at the time) probably did have that engine put in the car, after the original one probably blew up. The rest of the story about it being a special "1 of 3" built by Chevy is B.S. He would need some sort of hard documentation to support his claim. Otherwise, it is what it is, just a "story".
