Default fuel needle

problem on my 97 3.8. whenever i fill the car up with gas, the needle goes all the way past F over into the small blank grey area on the right of it. goes down in normal fashion as i drive more and more gas gets used, then it always goes down quickly once i get to 1/4. before i know it im near E. so therefore, i always fill up once i get just under 1/4. what's my problem?

It is just the way the tank is shaped. That is normal unforunately.

Yes. Gas pumps don't all auto shut off at the same time, so some fill your tank more than others. It's nothing to worry about.

id crap myself from being nervous everytime that happened. i ran out of gas on the side of the road from my problem mentioned above one time, just because i didnt believe it was empty after being on 1/4 a couple of miles earlier, and it did not feel good. had to get my mom to go get the gas can for the lawn mower and use the gas out of there to give me enough gas to get to the gas station (which thankfully, was only a mile ahead).

it always feels like that for me too, i can have just above 1/4 tank at a level stand still, then if i brake hard enough i can make it read below empty for a second, and with quick accel i can make it say half tank, and 10 bucks here get's me half a tank(gas is like 1.70)
