Need help with gas gage
Hi every one.
I am new to this forum. I recently purchased a 67 Camaro and the fuse block was in bad shape and the interment panel didn't work properly. So I replaced the under dash harness with an AAW factory fit harness and well I was at it I replaced the engine, console and rear body harness. This solved almost all of my problems. However one still remains, with the key in the off position the gas Gage comes to rest at the 9:00 position, when the key is turned on the needle rises and seems to reed correctly.
Any thoughts or solutions?
Thanks D

Hi here is one way to check the gause is workimg or not......
The easiest way to verify the gauge is working is to make a test sending unit. Go to radio shack and buy a potentiometer. Disconnect the wire at the sending unit and wire in the tester with the wire from the gauge going into the tester and the wire coming out of the tester going to ground. Adjust the potentiometer and watch the gas gauge respond. With this, the gauge is probably good. If you can put numbers to the resistance, you can prove it absolutely. I did this on my truck a few years back and it worked enough to troubleshoot the problem to a bad sending unit. Most likely, your sending unit is bad. It's in a much worse environment. Gauges that aren't powered can read anything. Ignore what it reads without power.

When gauge reads 1/2 tank, 12 noon, key off, does needle move?
When gauge reads above 1/2 tank, key off, does the needle fall to 3 PM?
If gauge reads correct approximately with key on, don't fix it.

Thanks for the for the trouble shooting info robinsonparker hope fully I can get a chance this week end to work on it.
Everett#2390. I believe that the gas gage reads accurately, but I am a little OCD so I just can't leave it like it is. Plus I need to have the car appraised ASAP and i need every thing to be working correctly for that.
When gauge reads 1/2 tank, 12 noon, key off, does needle move? Yes it falls to 9 o'clock
When gauge reads above 1/2 tank, key off, does the needle fall to 3 PM? No it falls to 9 o'clock
Thanks for the help.
