Default Installing Tach in place of Fuel gauge

I bought a OER tach for dash of my 69. I want to remove the fuel gauge and put tach in it's place. I am assuming I will have to cut the area where the fuel gauge was so tach will fit in. Is this correct? If so, then how much? When I ordered the new tach I assumed it would fit right in. But the 3 holes don't line up.
