Default ignition update question

Hi all, been a while since my last post, so heres a remender of the longest restoration (that i know of)

1982, purchased my 1969 350
1983, damaged piston
1983-2011 garaged, yes 28 years!

has 80000 original miles on the clock, needed a full body off chasis restoration and its getting one! body is almost ready for paint (frost green/white vinyl roof) so far everything is original, changed lots of stuff; new carpets headliner door inner panels, new vinyl roof, new leaf springs, new shocks all round, new brakes all round, master cylinder etc etc.

I am about to start the engine, i need to make it reliable but keep it as original as possible. My question finally is; i want to update the ignition for electronic, some kind of MSD control, coil pack, crank sensor? nothing too radical, probably like to change a few maps but dont want to go silly as will be driven to shows etc so needs to run ok on street. Any suggestions??

Cheers,
Radders, UK

You don't need anything wild for your 350, even an MSD box would be overkilll. A stock GM HEI distributor will do wonders, as would an MSD distributor. Remember that your old coil is fed by a resistance wire, and an HEI upgrade runs off a full 12 volt supply.

Default ignition question follow up

Thanks '69, whilst we are on the subject of things electric, what do you guys do about the alternator (dynamo really) and voltage regulator? i feel i need to upgrade to a proper alternator and ditch the regulator although i would keep it for originality.

Cheers,

I upgraded mine to an internal regulated alternator years ago.
You're from across the pond. Isn't dynamo in reference to a generator, which is different from an alternator.
