Hi guys, my name is Ken. I am new to the forum and looking to buy a 67 camaro that is supossed to be #'s matching according to the owner and I need to verify it but I can not get to the block casting #'s, I see it to be impossible w/o removing the engine from car.
So this is what I was able to get from the car:
Trim tag built date is 10D= 4th week of october
Engine pad front passenger side= TI0I3MM which I was able to decode to Tonawanda plant/october 13th engine is -according to the MM- an L30/275hp married to an automatic powerglide
Heads (I was able to take 1 valve cover off) are casting # 3890462 which I found out on the dirtforum.com were produced from 64 thru 68, they are double humps and are supposed to be 64cc chambers but I guess there is no telling on wether they are 2.06/1.60 or 1.94/1.50 which are the two options I was able to find to the casting #.
Vin is 124677Nxxxxxx but the pad where you would find the partial vin only has the plant and built date on, no partial vin.
Question is, is it safe enough to believe this is a #'s matching car?
It is a project car for which the owner wants $8,000 and I know for a fact that trunk floor and the rear quarters (full) need to be replaced and posibly 1 door skin maybe both. I just don't want to pay premium for a car that is not.

And no, you can never assume it's numbers matching. If you can't match the numbers up, you have to assume it's NOT numbers matching. That's how the cookie crumbles without verification.
Sometimes there is a VIN pad near the oil filter, check there too. And I'm really surprised that you can't even get a peek at the casting number down between the firewall.

 

I guess my head is way to big to be able to stick in there with the hood in my way. Am I looking at the right place, in front of the bell housing??? I find it to be impossible to see anything in there. I guess I will give it one more shot tomorrow.

 

Yeah, top of the bellhousing mount area. It can be kind of tricky to get your head in there. For some reason, I have no problem seeing mine!
How about using a mirror? Still, if you can get the casting numbers, it will only tell you if the block is the right vintage, not numbers matching to the car.

 

OK, so there will be no vin or partial vin on the block itself?

 

There usually is. If not on top of the block by the head, then look on the left side of the block by the oil filter boss.
