Default HEI Ignition

A friend of mine told me if i want to install an hei ign. in my 68 i might have to move the firewall back with a B.F.H. about 1/2''. Runnin a 350 motor. Does not sound good to me. Any comment's greatly appreciated.

keep the BFH outta there. if there's not enough room for a GM HEI use the Mallory small cap HEI should be the same size as the old points dist and better performance so no need to go bashin in the firewall

I helped my brother install an HEI distributor in his completely stock 68, fit like a glove with still having firewall clearance. No hammering involved.

You can also go aftermarket HEI if clearances are a concern. I have HEI on my 427 and my 327, and I just bought a Pertronix kit for both, so the distributor looks the same. Then I used an eternal high output coil on both to get the hotter spark. I can still use all the stock caps and rotors, so it's a really nice way to go and keeps the stock look.
I've had the Pertronix unit in my Camaro's 427 for 12 years now and no problems. The 327 in my gasser has only been in a year, but works great so far!

Typically you have to massage, read hammer, the firewall for the hei to clear.

I think it comes from variation in manufaturing cause I have seen cars that have fit with no adjustments I have seen them need only slight tweak and I have seen them need a pounded in semi circle.

Plus one of the Pertronic point convertion kits. I upgrade to the petronix and a Holley avenger at the same time so I am not 100% which helped more but man did that improve the low RPM drivabily.
