the engine was too far back and now it's too far forward.
I just installed the 383 stroker into my 69 Camaro and sadly there was a huge problem as the engine was sitting way too far back. The Distributor was right against the firewall and the clutch fork was against the floor pan so that it would be impossible to shift. I did some more homework and saw that there were other mounts for 350 engines since I was using the stock 307 mounts. After getting the 350 mounts I saw that they would not move the engine forward at all, unless I reversed them (putting the driver's side on the passenger side and vice versa, I realize this is kind of a awkward fix but I could think of nothing else). This did bring the engine forward enough, the driveshaft would fit, the clutch fork had plenty of room, and everything seemed right with the world. Until this past weekend when I tried to put the headers on. Now the engine is so far forward that the headers can not bolt to it as the steering linkage and the steering gear box get in the way. I'm kind of out of ideas, as before the engine was 2 inches too far back, now too far forward. Has any one else encountered a problem like this before or know of any possible fixes? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
do you have an hei distr.? if so it should fit right up tight to the firewall maybe an 1/8 inch from it as these were never factory made with hei.
things to check
1. bad body to frame bushings
2 bad worn trans mount at rear of trans
3 bad engine side motor mounts (rubber bad)
here is a pic of my 68 with 355 with hei

The mounts were the whole set, engine and frame mounts. Yes it is an HEI distributor and thank you for the pic and the advice, that's one less thing to worry about. I spoke to Jim at Hurst Driveline Conversions and was told to check the alignment of the frame to the body, hopefully that's the answer and I can move on from there. Now I just need to learn the best way to align the subframes on these cars and give it another go. I was also told that the clutch fork I was using (a Lakewood) will not work in this car regardless, so looks like I get to drop the transmission one more time. Sadly I won't even have time to look at the thing until next weekend, so hopefully there'll be some good news waiting for me then.
